Can I apply with more than one idea?
No. You should select the idea you feel most passionate about because if you are accepted for that idea, that is what you will work on at GSE. Teams will iterate and pivot during the GSE experience so the original idea may look or be something different at the end, but the idea in your application will be your starting point.
If I apply as a member of a team, what happens if the team is not accepted?
No single team member or members will be accepted apart from the entire team. For team applications, the entire team must be committed to attending the full GSE session. The product/service idea that the team applies with is the idea they will work on at GSE.
Can I submit two applications - as a member of a team and as an individual?
Yes, you may submit two applications. However, your individual application MUST be for a different idea or to be accepted based on your skills, talents and interest. You must also submit a different video. We strongly urge you to tell your teammates if you are applying separately as well.
I want to apply to the Governor's Scholars Program and/or the Governor's School for the Arts. Can I apply for both/all?
Yes, you may apply to all the programs. Depending on whether the dates overlap, if you are accepted to more than one, then you may need to choose only one to attend. All programs will send out acceptance letters around the same time and all allow you to turn down an acceptance – you would only need to let us know by the deadline given in our letter so that we can offer the spot to another entrepreneur.
If I apply based on my skills, talents and interest, how will I be assigned to a team?
When you receive your acceptance letter, we will include a list of the ideas that will be worked on and ask you to indicate to us your top three preferences. We will try our best to match you with one of the ideas that inspire you the most.
What if I have an idea for a traditional business (like a woodworking shop) I want to start after high school?
That’s great! You should apply to be a member of a team on the basis of your skills and passion for entrepreneurship. When you get back home, you will be able to apply the concepts you learn at GSE to your own business idea and be ahead of the game. You may even see a new way of looking at your business to make it more innovative than you thought possible before.
What will a typical day look like?
There will be no typical day, but you can expect to spend some mornings listening to an experienced entrepreneur and learning one of the nine blocks of the Business Model Canvas. Then you'll go to your coworking space and apply what you've learned to your startup. How you choose to apply it, will be up to your team. For example, you may decide to get out and speak with potential customers at a local shopping area, while others go to the MakerLab to 3D print their prototype. You will have plenty of time for both activities. As teams move along developing their product or service and validating their business model, each will have flexibility to create a schedule that works for them. Also, special field trips and activities will be interspersed throughout the three weeks. Teams are encouraged to take advantage of each others skills.
Do I spend the entire time with only my team?
No, not at all. In fact, we encourage you to meet and hang out with entrepreneurs from other teams during social times. Networking is an important part of business. Roommates and living quarters will be assigned in a way to separate teams and allow for more social interaction.
Will I have free time?
You will have some free time in the evenings. There will be organized recreational and social activities as well as down time to recharge.
Can my parents and family visit me?
No, due to the tight schedule, family visits are not permitted. You will be having a fantastic time, and it will fly by fast! You will be able to email and talk/text with your parents from GSE, but they will not be allowed to visit and you will not be allowed to leave campus.
Do I need to attend the whole time?
Yes, GSE is a full three weeks including weekends. Your teammates are counting on you to be there and every person has talents and skills that make them a valuable asset to the team. Exceptions must be disclosed and approved in advance of the summer session and will only be made for compelling reasons, such as the death of an immediate family member.
